Biographical Outline of Dr Chaturvedi

Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi stands as a distinguished figure within India’s academic landscape, boasting an illustrious career that spans over 47 years. His extensive experience encompasses teaching, research, policy formulation, and the management of higher education institutions. Notably, he has served with distinction as a Professor and the director of the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) in Greater Noida, an institution distinguished as a Category-1 school by the All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) Graded Autonomy Scheme. Additionally, Dr. Chaturvedi has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of private-sector higher education in India as one of the founders and the Executive President of the Education Promotion Society of India (EPSI). Since its inception in 2005, EPSI has emerged as a prominent voice for private higher education institutions and universities across the nation, earning widespread recognition from the Ministry of Education, the Government of India, and various regulatory bodies within the higher education sector.

Dr. Chaturvedi’s academic journey began at the prestigious Agra University, now renamed Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Agra University, a beacon of higher education in North India since its establishment in 1927. He completed both his Master of Commerce (M.Com.) and Ph.D. in Business Administration at this renowned institution. In 1977, he embarked on his teaching career, joining Raja Balwant Singh College, Agra, as a Lecturer in the Department of Business Administration within the Faculty of Commerce. This marked the beginning of his distinguished journey in the world of academia.

In 1995, Dr. Chaturvedi embarked on a significant new chapter in his career by joining the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in New Delhi, initially serving as the Deputy Director before his promotion to Director in 1998. During this period, he played a pivotal role in shaping policies and laying the groundwork for the establishment of the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), a key body responsible for accrediting all technical programs under the AICTE’s purview. He actively participated in the council’s meetings, the executive committee, and the boards of studies, contributing his expertise to the strategic directions of these entities. During his tenure at AICTE from 1995 to 1999, he keenly engaged with the evolving landscape of engineering and management education in India, developing a profound understanding of its rapid expansion and the challenges it faced at the national level.

In 1999, at the age of 44, Dr. Chaturvedi was entrusted with the leadership of the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) in Greater Noida by the esteemed B.K. Birla and Dr. Sarala Birla. They charged him with the ambitious goal of elevating BIMTECH to the ranks of India’s premier educational institutions. At that juncture, BIMTECH operated from a modestly equipped secondary school building with limited infrastructure and a small student body. Undeterred, Dr. Chaturvedi formulated “Vision-2005,” establishing a clear direction for the institute’s development, and the Board promptly endorsed it. This vision came to life with the creation of a sprawling 7-acre residential campus in Greater Noida in 2004, laying the foundation for BIMTECH’s strategic growth plan for 2009–2010. In a pioneering move between 2000 and 2002, BIMTECH introduced its inaugural full-time Postgraduate programs in Insurance and Retailing. These programs not only set a new standard for academic excellence but also served as a model for other educational institutions across India.

By 2015, BIMTECH had successfully secured NBA accreditation for all its programs, earning high commendations from the NBA and also received institutional accreditation from NAAC with an A+ grade. This achievement positioned BIMTECH among the elite institutions in India, earning it the distinction of a Category-1 school under the AICTE’s Graded Autonomy Scheme, alongside prestigious institutions like XLRI. Earlier, in 2013, BIMTECH expanded its educational footprint by establishing a new campus on a 30-acre land provided by the Government of Odisha. This expansion was further solidified in 2016, when it was officially recognized as Birla Global University, Bhubaneswar (BGU), following legislation passed by the state assembly. BGU has since offered a wide array of courses in fields such as management, commerce, mass media, law, and social sciences, thereby broadening its educational reach and impact.

Having elevated BIMTECH to the ranks of the top 20 private schools in India, with distinguished double accreditation from the NBA and NAAC, Dr. Chaturvedi set his sights on achieving global recognition. His goal was to secure international accreditations from esteemed bodies such as AACSB, EFMD, and AMBA. This vision came to fruition in 2022 when BIMTECH was honored with accreditation from the AACSB, making it one of only 21 schools in India to receive this prestigious international accreditation. After dedicating 25 years to transforming BIMTECH, Dr. Chaturvedi was superannuated in January 2024, continuing to serve on the Boards of Governors for both BIMTECH and BGU, contributing his vast experience and insight to guide their future endeavors.

In 2004, recognizing the challenges private sector universities and colleges faced under stringent regulatory frameworks, Dr. Chaturvedi proposed the creation of a national body akin to NASSCOM and AIU to advocate for their interests. This initiative gained momentum when the Yashpal Committee and the National Knowledge Commission began to address these concerns. With the backing of forward-thinking educators and entrepreneurs, Dr. Chaturvedi played a pivotal role in establishing the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) as a national society in Delhi, taking the helm as its Executive President. The esteemed late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam officially inaugurated the EPSI in April 2005.

Over the past two decades, EPSI has significantly expanded its influence across many of India’s major states, establishing itself as a leading national industry body for higher education. Both the union and state governments, along with regulatory authorities, have recognized this achievement. Dr. Chaturvedi’s leadership and vision have been instrumental in EPSI’s success, reflecting his significant contribution as both a founder and Executive President.

Nationally, Dr. Chaturvedi has actively engaged with leading industry and professional organizations, including the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), All India Management Association (AIMA), United Nations Global Compact Network India (UNGCNI), National HRD Network (NHRDN), Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS), Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) India, and the Higher Education Forum, Mumbai. On the international stage, his collaborations extend to prominent bodies such as the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the Global Business School Network (GBSN), and the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Dr. Chaturvedi’s efforts towards the internationalization of Indian education have taken him to over 20 countries, where he has contributed significantly to key conferences organized by AACSB and EFMD, among others.

In his quest to foster a vibrant research ecosystem at BIMTECH, Dr. Chaturvedi pioneered the establishment of a Ph.D. program in partnership with the University of Mysore and Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur. Furthermore, he introduced the Fellow and Executive Fellow Program in Management, which has gained recognition from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Under his mentorship, over 30 Ph.D.s and fellow candidates have flourished, contributing significantly to the fields of business, society, higher education, and strategic management. Dr. Chaturvedi has also made his mark as an author and editor, producing 10 influential books. Among these, his works “Transformation of Indian Higher Education” and “Quality Assurance, Accreditation, and Ranking” have received widespread acclaim, serving as seminal texts for understanding and improving higher education in India.

Through his career, Dr. Harivansh Chaturvedi has not only shaped the trajectory of higher education in India but also left an indelible mark on the academic and policy-making communities, embodying a legacy of excellence, innovation, and visionary leadership.
